Wet the surface first. Then apply a small amount of BKF and clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Use gentle pressure, rinse thoroughly, and dry the area. Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before you start.
For metal surfaces, leave Bar Keepers Friend on for no more than a minute to prevent discoloration. For plastic or porcelain, you might need a bit more time—just be sure to test it on a hidden spot first.
It is not advised to use on the face or cosmetic areas of consumer appliances. Many manufacturers apply a clear protective layer to help reduce fingerprints. The abrasive in BKF may harm this protective layer. Additionally, improper application may disturb the factory brushed appearance of some stainless (including commercial grade) appliances. Please consult the care section of manufacturer’s manual for proper cleaning procedures.
BKF requires thorough rinsing, which is difficult in non-drained, enclosed spaces such as an oven or microwave interior – so it is not recommended. Restrict using BKF to areas which can be easily rinsed, such as the inside of an oven door.
Absolutely. The key is to use as small an amount of BKF as the project allows and rinse thoroughly. The micro-abrasive particles may temporarily leave a white film if not rinsed completely. The abrasive used in BKF will not scratch glass or porcelain when properly used.
BKF is formulated to work on non-porous surfaces. Concrete is highly porous – BKF is not formulated or recommended for use on concrete.
No, you shouldn’t use BKF inside the dishwasher. You can spot-clean stainless steel tubs and doors, but rinse thoroughly and run an empty rinse cycle afterward.
You don’t always need gloves for casual use. But if you have sensitive skin or you’re cleaning for a long time, gloves are a smart choice. BKF can irritate sensitive skin, and it’ll sting any cuts.
BKF is distributed throughout Australia and several other global markets. Most Bar Keepers Friend products are abrasive, but not all. For example, our Superior Multi-Purpose Cleaner is non-abrasive. Use the powder for tough stains and the Soft Cleanser for gentler cleaning tasks.
No, it doesn’t. BKF cleans tough stains well, but it isn’t a disinfectant.
BKF Cookware contains extra active ingredients for degreasing. Try it on your more challenging pots and pans.
BKF is an acid-based cleaner, while Ajax is bleach-based. That makes BKF a better fit for rust and mineral stains, especially on stainless steel.
The contents of BKF do not expire or degrade when stored in a dry environment. To offer our customers the best value possible, we choose not to add an expensive lid when it is not required for most users. A helpful tip for those who may want to cover their can of BKF if stored under the sink or in a humid environment is to cover the top of the can with a sandwich bag (a rubber band can be used to make an air-tight seal if necessary).
The active ingredients in BKF do not expire. However, storage in a humid environment will cause the powder to solidify, try and keep open containers of BKF in a dry environment.
Bar Keepers Friend does not animal test in the manufacture of our products.
That white film usually means the surface wasn’t rinsed enough before drying. Re-wet the area with warm water, then clean it again with a small amount of BKF Soft Cleanser or a mild detergent. Use a soft cloth or sponge, rinse well, and dry with a clean cloth. Want to prevent it next time? Just make sure you rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
